Plan Parenthood With IVF(In Vitro Fertilization).
IVF
30 Jul 2024

Two decades back, the concept of IVF was a nascent idea, questionable, and not well accepted for reproduction. Today, IVF treatment is helping millions of couples have their own babies through the process, often called “test-tube babies.”

What Is IVF?

IVF stands for In-Vitro Fertilization, an advanced fertility treatment in which the eggs and sperms are fertilised outside the body in a lab. It is an ART-based procedure that helps women get pregnant.

 Glossary(Terms Related To IVF)

  • Fertilization- Union of sperm and egg forming embryo.
  • ART-based method-  IVF is a method of Assistive Reproductive Technology(ART) i.e. helping in reproduction.
  • Incubation- The process of maturing an embryo in a controlled and monitored environment.

How does It help you get pregnant?

The natural conception process involves a sperm fertilizing an ovulated egg, which develops into a healthy embryo and gets implanted over the uterine wall. If you are not falling pregnant naturally or with other infertility treatments, an infertility issue is probably hindering you from getting pregnant. In such cases, the IVF process helps execute the first two steps of fertilization and implantation, while the rest of the pregnancy ensues naturally.

The first step involves extracting the male and female gametes and fertilizing them outside the body in a controlled atmosphere or incubator. Once the embryo forms and matures, it is screened and finally implanted in the female partner’s uterus.

When Is It needed?

IVF is an advanced, or rather, the last-line of fertility treatment when other treatments are not effective or helpful.  It is recommended for:

  • Blocked fallopian tubes
  • PCOS
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Endometriosis
  • Low sperm count
  • Uterine issues
  • Risk of passing a hereditary disease
  • Unexplained infertility

The IVF Process

It is a complex procedure involving various steps. Here is a brief about each step and its importance.

  • Ovarian Stimulation

On the 2nd or 3rd day of menstruation, you will be administered ovary stimulation medication for timely ovulation. It also helps in multiple egg ovulation, which can then be fertilized in the IVF process. You will be monitored with regular ultrasound to keep track of ovulation.

  • Egg Retrieval And Sperm Collection

When the eggs have matured, the IVF expert plans for their retrieval. An HCG trigger shot is given 36-40 hours before retrieval. This allows the final maturation and easy release of eggs from the ovarian sheath (which wraps them).

During the same time, the sperm sample is collected from the male partner either through ejaculation or through testicular extraction.

  • Fertilisation

The egg and sperm are mixed in a petri dish to fuse and form a zygote (primary nucleus of an embryo). Next, when the embryo has formed, it is incubated in a controlled and favorable atmosphere to form a mature embryo.

  • Pre-Implantation Genetic Testing

After the embryo is lab-ready, fertility experts pass it through a special preimplantation genetic testing phase to identify any anomaly or hereditary chromosomal defect. It is a renowned benefit of IVF that, through PGT, parents can prevent a hereditary disease from passing to their child.

  •  Embryo Transfer

Finally, when the embryo is ready, it is implanted into the uterus under sedation. Before implantation, the female partner is put on fertility medication to prepare the uterine wall for embryo implantation.

How long does IVF treatment take?

Starting from ovulation, one IVF cycle may take 3- 4 weeks for completion until confirmation of pregnancy. Some individual cases are more complex than others, so the steps are split into parts, taking more time per cycle.

However, the efficiency of IVF is increasing with apt technology and medical advancements; there are chances of failure in the first cycle. In such a case, our IVF expert encourages you to be positive and choose another round of the IVF cycle because in many cases, the pregnancy is confirmed after multiple IVF attempts.

Are there any side effects?

After embryo transfer, you can experience symptoms such as:

  • Bloating
  • Cramping
  • Spotting
  • Breast tenderness due to high estrogen levels

Infact; cramping is considered a positive sign for conception.

During the IVF treatment, the stimulation drugs process may cause ovarian hyperstimulation in response to fertility medication gonadotropins. Therefore, we have introduced a new feature of IVF treatment -- IVF LIte

IVF Lite

IVF Lite involves a soft stimulation protocol with less fertility drug dose than conventional IVF treatment. This reduces the risk of ovarian hyperstimulation(OHSS), a condition when ovaries adversely respond to hormonal stimulation.

Our fertility experts choose the best version of IVF treatment for you for the best results.
