Tips To Take Care Of Yourself After Embryo Transfer
Fertility & Reproductive Health
30 Jul 2024

IVF process is an overwhelming journey for a woman. She is equally excited and anxious during every step of it! And when it comes to the embryo transfer phase, the excitement is at a different level altogether. It is the most awaited and anticipated step in an infertility treatment procedure. And why not? The actual waiting starts from the embryo transfer step, and the patient eagerly hopes that the wait ends with a piece of good news!

You maintained a super-healthy lifestyle, took your meds diligently, followed your doctor's instructions as expected, and finally, the embryo is transferred to your uterus.

Remember that you and your health are on priority from now on and for the next few weeks. While treating yourself like a delicate glass isn't necessary, you should relax and take it easy.

Here are a few care tips post embryo transfer:

Treat yourself good

Because the embryo will implant in the coming days, it's critical that you relax and think good, caring thoughts. Try to take a few days off work if possible. Unplug from the world's concerns.

Enjoy your favorite healthy meal, binge-watch your favorite TV shows or the latest rom-coms. Bed rest is not required; however, you can always ask your partner to assist you.

Never miss your meds

If your doctor has directed you to continue taking specific medications, you must do so. Progesterone, in particular, is essential for sustaining a pregnancy, and you will almost certainly be requested to continue.

Healthy eating should be your mantra.

You've been following a healthy diet in preparation for IVF, and you should keep doing so. After all, if everything goes as planned, you'll have a baby to care for in one month, and you'll want to be in great shape. However, take your vitamins only if your doctor says so. Also, if you have been prescribed prenatal vitamins, you need to take them immediately.

Stay hydrated

A well balance of water in your body can take care of half of the ailments in your body. So, keeping hydrated with adequate fluid and water intake is essential throughout this phase.

Begin with your folic acid doses

After the embryo transfer, you can always take your regular folic acid tablets. During pregnancy, your body will require at least 400mcg of folic acid each day, according to studies. This necessary vitamin B9 promotes embryonic neural development and helps to prevent neural tube abnormalities. It also reduces the chance of congenital abnormalities in babies.

Not heavy but light activities

Following embryo transfer in IVF, some precautions to take regarding physical activities include:

1. After embryo transfer and during pregnancy, do not bend, jump, run, jog, swim, or lift heavy weights.

2. Excessive physical activity might harm your child's growth and cause pregnancy issues.

3. Instead, go for gentle exercise such as walking, strolling around the park or on the beach, and yoga. Yoga asanas are excellent prenatal exercises. Regular practice of  these poses under the supervision of a qualified yoga instructor can increase your chances of having a safe pregnancy.

Identify red flags

Many times, symptoms during this phase are mild and can be ignored. But in case you come across the following signs in a severe form, report to your doctor immediately:

1. Severe abdominal pain

2. Bloating in the abdominal region

3. Nausea

4. Vomiting

Also, a bloated abdomen or an acute abdominal pain should be conveyed to your physician at once.
