What is Erectile Dysfunction? What can we do about it?

Erectile Dysfunction is a widespread issue that is defined as a man’s inability to achieve or maintain an erection, and it affects all men over the age of 40. Erectile Dysfunction can be caused by many factors, including psychological issues such as depression, anxiety or anger management problems. It may also be a sign of other more serious health problems such as diabetes or high cholesterol levels.

What is erectile dysfunction?

Men most frequently report erectile dysfunction, or ED, to their doctor when they have sex-related issues. Up to 30 million men may be impacted by it. Trouble achieving or maintaining a firm enough erection for intercourse is referred to as erectile dysfunction.

Even though it's common for men to experience occasional erection issues, ED that progresses or frequently occurs during sexual activity is abnormal and has to be treated.

ED can occur when:

  • Nerves are damaged, or penis blood flow is restricted
  • Due to emotional or stressful factors
  • As a sign of a more serious condition, such as atherosclerosis (hardening or clogged arteries), heart disease, high blood pressure, or diabetes-related high blood sugar.

What causes erectile dysfunction?

Male infertility cannot be caused by a single factor or a group of related causes. Erectile dysfunction is frequently misunderstood and requires medical attention because it can have various physical and psychological effects.

Some of the physical factors that cause erectile dysfunction are:

  • Clogged blood vessels (atherosclerosis)
  • Sleep disorders
  • Heart disease
  • High cholesterol
  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Alcoholism and other forms of substance abuse
  • Smoking
  • Treatments for prostate cancer or an enlarged prostate

Psychological causes of erectile dysfunction:

The brain is critical in setting off the chain of physical events that lead to an erection, beginning with sensations of sexual arousal. Many factors can affect sexual desire and either create or exacerbate erectile dysfunction.

  1. Depression, anxiety, or another type of mental illness.
  2. Pressure
  3. Relationship issues brought on by stress, a lack of communication, or other issues

Erectile dysfunction treatments

Since the condition can usually be resolved without intrusive procedures, they are frequently used first. The majority of ED treatments are non-intrusive, effective, and secure.

Intracavernosal injection therapy: Often known as "ICI" or "IU," Intracavernosal injection therapy can be applied through the urethra if oral medications are unsuccessful.

Testosterone therapy:  When low testosterone levels and poor sex drive are the causes of erectile dysfunction (ED), testosterone therapy may help men achieve regular erections and make it simpler to become pregnant.

Consult an expert as soon as possible if you suspect you have ED. Your goals, preferences, and other diagnostic and therapeutic alternatives will determine the type of treatment you require, ranging from lifestyle modifications to medication to surgery.
