Uterine Fibroids

Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous growths that develop in or on the uterus. While they are common and often asymptomatic, they can sometimes cause significant discomfort and fertility issues. MMC IVF offers comprehensive care to our clients, and we are proud of it.

Causes of Uterine Fibroids

The exact cause of uterine fibroids is not fully understood, but several factors may contribute, including:

  • Genetic Factors:

    • A family history of fibroids increases the likelihood of developing them.

  • Hormonal Factors:

    • Estrogen and progesterone, hormones that stimulate the uterine lining, also promote the growth of fibroids.

  • Other Growth Factors:

    • Substances that help the body maintain tissues, such as insulin-like growth factors, may affect fibroid growth.

Symptoms of Uterine Fibroids

Common symptoms include:

  • Heavy menstrual bleeding

  • Prolonged menstrual periods

  • Pelvic pain or pressure

  • Frequent urination

  • Difficulty emptying the bladder

  • Constipation

  • Backache or leg pains

  • Infertility or recurrent pregnancy loss

Diagnosis of Uterine Fibroids

At MMC IVF, we diagnose uterine fibroids through a combination of medical history, physical exams, and advanced diagnostic methods, including:

  • Ultrasound:

    • Transvaginal or abdominal ultrasound to visualize fibroids.

  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI):

    • Detailed imaging to determine the size and location of fibroids.

  • Hysterosonography:

    • An ultrasound procedure using saline to expand the uterine cavity for better imaging.

  • Hysteroscopy:

    • A procedure using a small camera to examine the inside of the uterus.

Treatment Options for Uterine Fibroids

Treating uterine fibroids requires a personalized approach based on the severity of symptoms and the patient's fertility goals. Here are some options we offer:

  • Medications:

    • Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonists to shrink fibroids

    • Hormonal therapies to regulate menstrual cycles

    • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for pain relief

  • Minimally Invasive Procedures:

    • Uterine artery embolization to cut off blood supply to fibroids

    • MRI-guided focused ultrasound surgery (FUS) to destroy fibroids

  • Surgical Interventions:

    • Myomectomy to remove fibroids while preserving the uterus

    • Hysterectomy in severe cases

  • Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART):

    • In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) to help achieve pregnancy if fibroids affect fertility
